Bothar an dTreabh Junction Improvements

Project Summary

Coffey acted as main contractor for the conversion of two major roundabout junctions on the N6 dual carriageway from Dublin to Galway into signalised junctions, improving traffic flow and capacity at this key transport corridor.

Project Description

The project involved the conversion of the Font and Morris roundabouts into signal-controlled junctions, including a signalised bus gate and improved links to the Monivea Road. A total of 22,000m² of surfacing was laid, with new drainage systems installed to manage surface water via gullies to a 375mmØ carrier drain.

Traffic management was critical to the success of the scheme, ensuring two lanes of traffic remained open and rush hour flows were maintained. Numerous underground services—including fibre optic cables, HV electrical cables and water mains—crossed the site. These were exposed by hand-digging and either protected, diverted or lowered in consultation with the statutory authorities. Early engagement with utility providers ensured these works were delivered within the programme. A strict permit-to-dig system was implemented across the site. The scheme was delivered within tight contract timescales and completed in advance of Galway’s hosting of the Volvo Yacht Race.

Scope of Works

The works included:

  • Construction of new signalised junctions at Font and Morris roundabouts.
  • Signalised bus gate and junction improvements at Morris, including connection to the Monivea Road.
  • Provision for future UMTC (Urban Motorway Traffic Control) installation.
  • Installation of new drainage, kerbing, lighting, surfacing, footpaths and cycle tracks.
  • Planning and replacement of existing surface course around both roundabouts.
  • New signage and road markings across the carriageway and footpath/cycle track network.
  • Minor landscaping works.

Technical Highlights

  • 22,000m² of new surfacing delivered within live traffic conditions.
  • Careful traffic management planning to maintain two operational lanes throughout construction.
  • Hand-excavation and protection/diversion of major services including HV cables, water mains and fibre optic lines.
  • Early collaboration with utility providers ensured delivery within programme.

Added Value

  • Works completed ahead of schedule to support Galway’s hosting of the Volvo Yacht Race.
  • Reduced disruption to road users through carefully phased traffic management.
  • Rigorous permit-to-dig procedure minimised risks around utilities and improved site safety.

Environmental, Safety or Community Measures

  • Ongoing engagement with statutory authorities to minimise disruption to essential services.
  • Traffic management designed to reduce congestion and maintain rush hour flows.
  • New cycle tracks and footpaths provided to encourage sustainable transport use.
