Project Description

The primary objective of this project was to render the station accessible to mobility and visually impaired customers in compliance with relevant legislation and appropriate standards, guides, and codes of practice. The secondary objective was to carry out other enhancement works to the station at the same time as the planned accessibility work in order to ensure that construction works were co-ordinated; cost efficiencies in design, tender and construction; abortive work avoided and passenger disruption minimised. The enhancement works included the provision of CCTV, fire alarms, intruder alarms, expansion of telecom infrastructure and the installation of new signage.

  • Replacement of copers and tactile paving on platforms.
  • Resurfacing and line marking of platforms.
  • Resurfacing and line marking of car parks.
  • Installation of new ducting, chambers and drainage including aco-drain and tie-in to existing infrastructure.
  • Installation of under track crossings (UTX).
  • Installation of new lighting, CCTV, PA, Help Points and Hearing Induction Loops throughout.
  • Provision of temporary accommodation to station staff.
  • Refurbishment of station buildings, to include new ticket counters, ballistic glazing, anti-slip flooring, tiling, ceilings, kitchen fit-out, toilet fit-out including new disabled toilet packs, automatic doors, roller shutters, steel plated timber doors and finishing works.

The temporary accommodation provided accessible toilets and waiting rooms while the station buildings were closed. Existing services including S&E and fibre optic had to be negotiated during the course of the works with any under track crossings and much of the excavation works monitored by Irish Rail staff.Rigorous safety procedures were implemented to ensure no damage was caused to existing services.
