Bothar and Treabh Junction Improvements

Project Summary

The main contractor for the conversion of two major roundabout junctions to signalled junctions to improve traffic flow on the N6 dual carriageway from Dublin into Galway.

Project Description

The main contractor for the conversion of two major roundabout junctions to signalled junctions to improve traffic flow on the N6 dual carriageway from Dublin into Galway.  A total of 22,000m2 of surfacing was laid.  New drainage was laid to take surface water from gullies to a 375mmØ carrier drain.  Carefully planned traffic management was critical to keeping two lanes open for traffic and maintaining rush hour traffic flows.  Numerous services crossed the site, including fibre optic cables, HV electrical cables and water mains.  These were exposed by hand-digging and were either lowered and protected or diverted in consultation with the statutory authorities.  Early meetings with the utility providers allowed these works to be carried out within the programme.  A permit to dig procedure was rigidly enforced on the site.  The works were successfully completed within tight contract timescales ahead of Galway’s hosting of the Volvo Yacht Race.
