M9 River Avon Bridge Deck Replacement

Project Summary

Coffey was appointed as Main Contractor for the refurbishment of the M9 River Avon Bridge near Linlithgow, West Lothian. The works involved concrete and drainage repairs, bridge waterproofing, new expansion joints, and resurfacing, delivered under live motorway traffic conditions using tidal contra-flow management.

Project Description

The project required extensive refurbishment of the M9 River Avon Bridge. Key works included replacement of expansion joints, hydro-demolition and repair of damaged concrete, drainage improvements, bridge waterproofing, new road restraint systems, precast kerbing, resurfacing, and road markings.

Drainage improvements involved filling existing gullies and constructing 40 new gullies offset from the carriageway. Concrete repairs were undertaken using hydro-demolition to expose reinforcement before reinstatement. Spray-applied waterproofing was completed with an SA1030 bond coat.
