M7/N24 Ballysimon Junction Improvement Scheme

Project Summary

This scheme involved the upgrade of the M7/N24 Ballysimon Junction to improve traffic capacity and flow. Works included widening the existing bridge from three to five lanes, construction of a new roundabout, realignment of the N24 and associated drainage and roadworks over a 2 km stretch.

Project Description

The motorway bridge was modified to increase capacity from three lanes (two straight-through and one turning lane) to five lanes (four straight-through and one turning lane). The improvement works also included junction upgrades, the construction of a new roundabout, realignment of the N24 trunk road, new drainage systems and widening of the northbound M7 slip road to provide an additional exit lane.

Scope of Works

The works included:

  • Widening of motorway bridge by removing hard shoulder and reducing verge width.
  • Construction of a new roundabout at Old Ballysimon Road junction.
  • 2 km of road realignment with new drainage and service ducts.
  • Stream diversion into a precast concrete box culvert.
  • Gabion basket embankment construction.
  • Street lighting, fencing, landscaping and protection of live services.
  • Bridge waterproofing remedial works.
  • Upgrade of two sets of traffic signals and control system.
  • Approximately 14,000 m² of road construction, including earthworks, new pavement and resurfacing.
  • Recycling of tarmac planings and reuse of existing safety barriers, lighting columns and drainage units.

Technical Highlights

  • Widening of a live motorway bridge under traffic management.
  • Use of recycled tarmac planings to reduce carbon footprint.
  • Reuse of key infrastructure elements to provide cost savings.
  • Careful coordination of phased road construction and surfacing operations.

Added Value

  • Enhanced traffic capacity and safety at a major interchange.
  • Sustainable construction approach through recycling and reuse.
  • Efficient coordination with subcontractors to ensure timely delivery.
  • Upgraded traffic management systems for improved junction performance.

Environmental, Safety or Community Measures

  • Recycling of materials reduced waste and environmental impact.
  • Reuse of existing infrastructure minimised resource use.
  • Daily inspections of traffic management ensured safety for road users.
  • Close liaison with authorities and police to minimise disruption during construction.
