Project Summary
Coffey delivered the construction of 1.1 km of new road and a 3-span bridge over the Camowen River on the outskirts of Omagh, County Tyrone. The works also included significant drainage, utilities, public lighting, and tie-ins to the existing road network.
Project Description
The project involved the construction of 1.1 km of new roadway, supported by 1.5 km of new road drainage, 3 km of telecoms ducting, and a new 1.1 km water main. Works also included the installation of 36 public lighting columns, movement of 50,000 m³ of material, and completion of the full road formation and surfacing.
Tie-ins to the existing network included a new roundabout at the western end and a T-junction with bellmouth at the eastern end, providing efficient integration with the local road system.
Scope of Works
The works included:
- Construction of 1.1 km of new road and 1.5 km of road drainage.
- Installation of 3 km of telecoms ducting and 1.1 km of water main.
- Installation of 36 public lighting columns.
- Excavation and movement of 50,000 m³ of material, including 26,000 m³ of peat.
- Construction of a 3-span, 89-metre-long bridge over the Camowen River.
- Road formation, surfacing, and tie-ins to the existing network via roundabout and T-junction.
Technical Highlights
- 89-metre bridge with precast concrete beams on reinforced concrete piers and abutments.
- Foundations designed with reinforced concrete shell and augur piles.
- Re-use of 24,000 m³ of site-won material for fill.
- Effective traffic management, particularly at tie-in points and road crossings for construction traffic.

- Delivered 5 months ahead of the contractual completion date by avoiding winter working.
- Coffey provided full design responsibility for critical structural elements, including foundations, beams, bearings, parapets, and restraint systems.
Environmental, Safety or Community Measures
- Extensive liaison with Fisheries and Rivers agencies to protect the Camowen River.
- Agreed pollution control method statements to prevent run-off and protect water quality.
- Continuous monitoring of run-off during the works.
- Careful planning to safeguard the adjacent listed railway bridge structure.
