Glenkindie Bridge Redecking

Project Summary

Coffey was appointed as main contractor for the redecking of Glenkindie Bridge, a two-span through-girder bridge carrying the C67M road over the River Don in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Project Description

The project involved the replacement of the existing 23m long bridge deck, which has a width of 3.85m. The works comprised installation of temporary works, construction of a crash deck containment system, removal of the existing deck, strengthening and refurbishment of the existing pier and abutments, and alterations to the pier, abutments and wing walls to accommodate the new deck arrangement.

A new steel beam and reinforced concrete composite deck was constructed, including waterproofing, fabrication and installation of parapets, tie-in to the existing road, and associated landscaping. A temporary bridge and access roads were constructed to divert traffic and maintain connectivity while the original bridge was closed.

Scope of Works

The works included:

  • Installation of temporary works and crash deck containment system.
  • Removal of the existing bridge deck.
  • Strengthening and refurbishment of existing pier and abutments.
  • Alterations to pier, abutments and wing walls for new deck.
  • Construction of new steel beam and reinforced concrete composite deck.
  • Waterproofing and installation of parapets.
  • Road tie-ins and landscaping works.
  • Provision of temporary bridge and access roads for traffic diversion.

Technical Highlights

  • Containment system and access platform designed to ensure no entry to the River Don during works.
  • Full structural survey of the steel bridge undertaken by Coffey to determine weight prior to lifting operations.
  • Crash deck containment system provided safe working access and environmental protection.

Added Value

  • Temporary bridge and access routes ensured no disruption to local traffic during works.
  • Detailed survey and planning optimised lifting operations and reduced programme risk.
  • Measures implemented to protect the river environment during construction.

Environmental, Safety or Community Measures

  • Crash deck containment system eliminated the need to enter the river, protecting water quality and ecology.
  • Temporary bridge minimised disruption for the local community by maintaining road access.
  • Landscaping works reinstated affected areas on completion of construction.
