Sligo Wastewater Treatment Plant

Project Summary

Coffey completed the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant, pumping station, and sludge treatment centre at Finisklin, County Sligo. The works were undertaken on a greenfield site, including a new outfall to Sligo Harbour and sludge treatment facilities at outlying satellite locations.

Project Description

The project involved the construction of a wastewater treatment works, pumping station, and sludge treatment centre. Civil works were undertaken by Coffey, with M&E design and build delivered by Enpure Ltd. The scope included reinforced concrete structures, structural steel buildings, pumping stations, sludge digesters, and the provision of associated pipelines and access infrastructure.

Scope of Works

The works included:

  • Construction of reinforced concrete tanks, including aeration, primary and final settlement, oxidation, storm, and sludge digesters.
  • Construction of pumping stations and sludge treatment facilities.
  • Erection of structural steel and blockwork buildings for screening, administration, and sludge de-watering.
  • Installation of pipelines, including outfall, stormwater, water mains, and interconnecting sewers.
  • Groundworks including site ducting, roadways, footpaths, car parking, and hard-standing areas.
  • Piling and water management at the pumping station due to proximity to the sea.

Technical Highlights

  • Construction of deep reinforced concrete tanks, with some tanks up to 13 m deep and several fully underground.
  • Erection of complex sludge digesters and aeration tanks with high structural requirements.
  • Piling and dewatering at the pumping station to manage proximity to the sea.
  • Installation of extensive pipelines including outfall to Sligo Harbour and large-diameter ductile iron mains.
  • Integration of multiple buildings and process facilities within a congested greenfield site.
  • Coordination of civil, structural, and service installation works under challenging site constraints.

Added Value

  • Effective coordination of civil, structural, and pipeline works to maintain schedule and manage site constraints.
  • Solutions implemented for congested and sensitive areas, minimising risks and delays.

Environmental, Safety or Community Measures

  • Sequencing works to minimise disruption to the surrounding area.
  • Protection of local marine environment during outfall installation.
  • Controlled site access and safety measures to protect the community and environment.
