Coffey Delivers Key Sustainable Travel Infrastructure for Galway City

Coffey is working with Galway City Council’s Active Travel Department on a transformative project that supports greener, safer, and more connected transport in Galway. The Ballybane Road and Castlepark Road Cycle Network Scheme, funded by the National Transport Authority and the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, is now underway with Coffey as the principal contractor.

Designed to benefit all road users—particularly pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport commuters—the scheme is a significant step toward achieving Galway’s active travel and climate goals. In partnership with consulting engineers AtkinsRéalis, Coffey is delivering a range of upgrades that will improve safety, accessibility, and sustainability throughout the area.

Key Infrastructure Improvements:

  • Dedicated Cycle & Pedestrian Lanes
Segregated paths are being introduced to support safer walking and cycling, promoting healthier and more active travel choices.
  • Enhanced Public Transport and Safety Features
Twelve new bus stops and eleven signalised pedestrian crossings will improve public transport access and make roads safer for everyone.
  • Modernised Junctions
Redesigned junctions and raised crossings are being implemented to streamline traffic flow and reduce collision risks.
  • Upgraded Road Surfaces
Full resurfacing and remarking of Ballybane and Castlepark Roads will improve driving conditions and extend the life of these key routes.
  • Improved Green Spaces
New landscaping elements will enhance the streetscape and contribute to Galway’s broader environmental and aesthetic goals.

This project is of particular benefit to students and staff at Atlantic Technological University (ATU), as well as to local residents, businesses, and community services relying on improved connectivity.
