Coffey installs UV disinfection plant at Aughafeerish WTP on behalf of Irish Water

Irish Water, working in partnership with Laois County Council, have recently announced the completion of upgrades to the water treatment process at Abbeyleix Water Treatment Plant (Aughafeerish WTP). Completion of these works has led to the subsequent removal of the plant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland Remedial Action List. Coffey delivered a containerised UV disinfection unit to supplement the existing water treatment capacity on the Aughafeerish site.

Coffey designed, installed and commissioned a containerised UV water disinfection plant at Aughafeerish WTP. The unit was installed adjacent to the main treatment plant to provide UV disinfection before feeding back into the existing system. The containerised system consists of two duty/standby suction pumps with VSD control, two duty/standby UV reactors, flowmeters, electric actuated valves, a dedicated PLC and other ancillary equipment. Further to this an upgrade of the existing sodium hypochlorite system was carried out to meet current Irish Water Specifications for disinfection.

Completion of the work ensures the delivery of safe, clean drinking water to homes and businesses in Abbeyleix and surrounding areas and safeguards the water supply in the locality going forward.
