Advancing Active Travel in Galway City: Building a Safer, Greener Future

Coffey is working with Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe / Galway City Council’s Active Travel Department to deliver transformative upgrades along Ballybane Road and Castlepark Road. This project is a key part of Galway’s commitment to safer, more sustainable travel options, and marks a significant milestone in improving the city’s infrastructure.

But this initiative is about much more than roads and pavements. It’s about enhancing daily life for Galway’s residents. From providing safer access for students attending Atlantic Technological University to giving families greener travel alternatives, this project reflects a shared vision for a connected, community-first city. These improvements have been shaped by extensive collaboration with local residents and businesses, ensuring they meet the real needs of the community.

Project Highlights

Thanks to funding from the National Transport Authority and the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, the following enhancements are being delivered:

  • Segregated pedestrian and cycle lanes: Supporting safer and more accessible active travel.
  • 12 new bus stops and 11 signalised crossings: Making public transport more reliable and convenient.
  • Smarter junctions: Enhancing traffic flow and overall safety.
  • Full road resurfacing: Creating smoother, more efficient journeys.
  • New landscaping: Improving local green spaces and the urban environment.

These upgrades are vital steps in promoting a people-friendly Galway, where every resident can choose cleaner, safer, and more efficient ways to travel. The work is already well underway, and the impact is beginning to be felt throughout the community.
