Castletroy Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade – Project Update

Works are progressing on the Castletroy Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade, which Coffey is delivering on behalf of Uisce Éireann under a Design, Build and Operate contract.

The project will increase the plant’s treatment capacity from 45,000 population equivalent (PE) to 77,500 PE, with provision for future expansion to 81,100 PE, supporting continued growth across East Limerick.

Construction activities are being delivered within the existing site boundary, with the wastewater treatment plant remaining fully operational throughout the works.

The upgrade includes:

● A 4,500 m³ stormwater storage and return system

● Upgraded inlet works, including screening, grit handling and odour management

● A new primary treatment building with mechanical filtration

● Repurposing of existing assets to improve sludge storage and handling

● Expansion of secondary treatment using the IFAS process

● Clarifier optimisation and a new scum pumping system

● Enhanced dewatering systems, centrifuges and integrated SCADA control

● Flood resilience measures, including a dedicated flood event pumping station

● Energy efficiency improvements, including the installation of solar panels
Internal roads, lighting, regrading and stormwater attenuation upgrades

Once complete, the scheme will contribute to the protection of the Lower River Shannon SAC while strengthening long-term wastewater resilience for the region.
