Cleaner Waters at Trá na mBan: How New Infrastructure Helped Turn the Tide

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published its Bathing Water Quality in Ireland 2024 report, and it brings welcome news for one of Galway’s coastal gems.

Trá na mBan, a small bathing beach in An Spidéal, has gone from a ‘Poor’ classification to ‘Excellent’ in just one season. This dramatic improvement is the result of targeted investment, coordinated action, and the successful delivery of new wastewater infrastructure.

Coffey’s Role in the Turnaround

Coffey was proud to support Uisce Éireann and Galway County Council by designing and constructing the new wastewater treatment plant serving the An Spidéal area. Commissioned as part of a Special Management Plan to address persistent pollution issues, the plant played a key role in restoring water quality at Trá na mBan. It was formally opened at a ceremony in November 2023.

Before these upgrades, the beach faced ongoing challenges from wastewater and septic discharges, with routine bathing water samples falling short of safe standards. Through collaboration between local stakeholders and engineering teams, these sources were identified, addressed, and mitigated.

The result is a more resilient coastal environment and a safer, cleaner beach for swimmers, residents, and visitors alike.

Why It Matters

This outcome demonstrates the positive impact of well-planned infrastructure delivered to a high standard. Clean water supports public health, biodiversity, and the local economy, and contributes to quality of life in communities across Ireland.

It’s also a great example of how local action can support national goals for environmental protection, climate adaptation, and sustainable development.

A Shared Success

We would like to acknowledge the efforts of Uisce Éireann, Galway County Council, and the broader project team involved in delivering this outcome. Infrastructure like this only works when the right expertise, partnerships, and long-term thinking come together.

At Coffey, we’re committed to delivering smart, sustainable solutions that make a difference, whether it’s safeguarding coastal waters, supplying clean drinking water, or upgrading critical systems across the country.
