Coffey Appointed for Castletroy Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade

Coffey is proud to announce our appointment to deliver the Design, Build and Operate contract for the Castletroy Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade on behalf of Uisce Éireann (Irish Water). This significant project will strengthen and future-proof wastewater services for one of Ireland’s fastest-growing urban areas.

The existing plant is operating close to its design capacity of 45,000 PE. The upgrade will increase treatment capacity to 77,500 PE, with provision for future expansion to 81,100 PE.

Key Elements of the Works

  • Development of a 4,500 m³ stormwater storage and return system
  • Upgrades to the full inlet works, including new screens, grit handling and odour management
  • Delivery of a new primary treatment building with mechanical filtration
  • Repurposing of existing assets for improved sludge storage and handling
  • Expansion of secondary treatment using the IFAS process
  • Optimisation of clarifiers and installation of a new scum pumping system
  • Upgraded dewatering systems, centrifuges and integrated SCADA control
  • Flood resilience measures, including a dedicated flood event pumping station
  • Energy efficiency improvements, such as the addition of solar panels
  • Internal roads, lighting, regrading and storm attenuation upgrades

All works will be completed within the existing site boundary, with the plant remaining fully operational throughout construction.

This project will play a vital role in protecting the Lower River Shannon SAC, supporting sustainable development and reinforcing long-term wastewater resilience for East Limerick.

At Coffey, our focus remains on enhancing communities through practical and robust engineering solutions. The Castletroy upgrade is a strong example of this commitment in action.
