At Coffey, innovation isn’t just a buzzword, it is a core value that defines how we work. We recently put that philosophy into action on a major infrastructure project: the Trimpley to Hampton Loade Pipeline. This initiative enhances water resilience for more than 65,000 customers supplied by Trimpley Water Treatment Works and supports Severn Trent’s AMP7 commitment to second source resilience.
A Strategic Connection for Resilience
Spanning 11.5km and featuring a 500mm diameter pipeline, this essential connection links Hampton Loade Water Treatment Works with the Trimpley Top Storage Reservoir. The pipeline is designed to provide a reliable second source of water supply, bolstering system resilience and safeguarding service delivery for communities across the region.

Smarter, Safer, More Efficient Delivery
“Do it Better” is more than a motto at Coffey, it is a mindset. On the Trimpley to Hampton Loade project, that mindset translated into a series of innovative approaches designed to improve safety, enhance precision, and ensure long term value. Here are just some of the methods and technologies we deployed:
- Pre-Construction UAV Surveys: High-resolution drone mapping was used to capture detailed terrain data before groundworks began. This laid the groundwork for precise land reinstatement and minimised environmental disruption.
- Zero Service Strikes: Leveraging Leica Machine Control Technology, all excavators were programmed to avoid known underground utilities. This helped protect existing infrastructure and ensured safe, uninterrupted progress.
- Tilt Rotator Excavators: These advanced machines enabled precision digging from outside the trench, reducing risk to operatives and enhancing overall site safety.
- Remote Guided Bore Drilling: Using sophisticated navigation systems, pilot drilling was kept exactly on line and level, ensuring a flawless fit for the new pipeline sections.
- TONGHAND® XS Integration: By eliminating manual wrench handling during horizontal directional drilling (HDD), we introduced a step change in both safety and automation.
- Live Site Monitoring: UAV technology provided real time site visibility and progress tracking, empowering the team to make faster, better informed decisions.
Setting a New Standard
The Trimpley to Hampton Loade Pipeline project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when innovation, purpose, and expertise align. It exemplifies our belief that infrastructure can and should be delivered in ways that protect people, enhance quality, and build resilience for the future.
