Advancing Active Travel in Galway City

Coffey is partnering with Galway City Council Active Travel Department on the Ballybane Road and Castlepark Road Cycle Network Scheme on a transformative project aimed at making Galway safer, greener, and better connected.

Funded by the National Transport Authority and the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, this project will deliver high-quality infrastructure that benefits all road users.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐮𝐩𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞:

• 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐂𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 & 𝐏𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬 – Segregated paths for safer, more enjoyable walking and cycling.

• 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 & 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 – 12 new bus stops and 11 signalised pedestrian crossings.

• 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 – Realigned layouts and raised crossings to improve flow and reduce risk.

• 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐬 – Full resurfacing and remarking of Ballybane and Castlepark Roads.

• 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 – Landscaping to enhance the local environment.

These improvements will significantly boost sustainable travel options in Galway, especially for students and staff at Atlantic Technological University (ATU), local residents, businesses, and community services. By prioritising accessibility and safety, this project supports healthier lifestyles, reduces traffic congestion, and encourages environmentally friendly travel choices.
