Reducing Reliance on Fossil Fuels: Practical ESG Action at Coffey

At Coffey, reducing energy use and carbon emissions is embedded in how we operate across our projects and offices. It forms part of our wider ESG approach and reflects how we apply our values in practice: Do The Right Thing, Do It Better, Do It Together.

Recent initiatives include embedding carbon and energy considerations into day to day operational decision making. This has involved targeted improvements to how treatment processes are designed and operated, with teams challenging energy use per cubic metre of water processed and addressing impacts at source as part of routine design and operational choices, ensuring we consistently do the right thing for the environment and the communities we serve.

Alongside this, plant and equipment have been upgraded across sites and offices, including the adoption of LED lighting and variable speed compressors. These changes focus on improving efficiency and reducing electricity demand, supported by stronger energy performance data capture and review to help teams better understand performance and identify opportunities for incremental improvement as they continue to do it better across every project.

We are also increasing our use of renewable energy through on site generation initiatives, alongside measures that support lower carbon transport, including the rollout of EV charging infrastructure across our operations. These steps form part of a practical approach to reducing reliance on fossil fuels across both project delivery and workplace activities, delivered by teams working closely together to achieve shared outcomes.

Beyond energy, environmental considerations continue to be integrated across our projects, from efficient material use and waste reduction to protecting watercourses and managing surface water through sustainable drainage. Delivering these outcomes relies on collaboration between designers, construction teams and site personnel to ensure sustainability measures are consistently implemented from design through to delivery, reflecting how we do it together in practice.
