Every wastewater treatment plant is different. The standard of operation shouldn’t be.

At Coffey, our Operations & Maintenance team manages critical wastewater infrastructure on behalf of municipal and private clients across Ireland. Our role is simple: to keep assets performing safely, efficiently and compliantly, protecting communities and the environment every day.

Across Ireland, Coffey operates and maintains:

• 29 municipal wastewater treatment plants
• 19 pumping stations for local authorities
• 58 pumping stations for private clients

Every site has its own design, constraints and risks. What they all demand is the same thing: consistent, compliant and reliable operation, every day and in all conditions.

Much of this work happens out of sight. Its impact is not. Safe public health outcomes, environmental protection and resilient infrastructure all depend on getting the fundamentals right, first time, every time.

Enfield WwTP

Enfield WwTP, Co. Meath | Innovation applied, not just installed

Enfield, Ireland’s largest reedbed wastewater treatment plant, recently received the Innovation in Construction Award ICE Awards 2026.

The site uses 11 sludge drying reed beds, removing the need for chemical additives and significantly reducing energy demand. The result is savings of more than 48,750 kWh each year and approximately 155 fewer HGV movements on Irish roads.

This is a strong example of how working with natural processes can deliver measurable environmental and operational benefits.

But systems like this are not passive.

Reed beds depend on carefully managed loading cycles, biological performance and long‑term conditioning. Knowing when and how to feed them, balancing sludge loading with rest periods for drainage, mineralisation and reed health, is essential to maintaining output and compliance.

That understanding sits with our O&M team on the ground. The award recognises the solution. The performance belongs to the people operating it, day in, day out.

Tubbercurry, Grange and Strandhill | Managing complexity where it matters

Across the North West, Coffey operates wastewater infrastructure serving communities including Tubbercurry, Grange and Strandhill.

These facilities differ in age, process design, loading patterns and receiving environments, from inland systems to sensitive coastal discharges. What they share is the need for dependable performance, regardless of season, weather or population changes.

Our teams manage that complexity daily. Monitoring performance, responding quickly to issues and making real‑time operational adjustments to protect compliance and minimise environmental impact.

This work may not come with awards or headlines. It is just as critical.

Because in operations and maintenance, performance is not defined by one project on one day. It is defined by consistency, across every plant and pumping station, every single day.
