Meet John Gibbons, Energy Director at Coffey

We’re delighted to highlight the leadership behind our growing Energy division at Coffey.

John Gibbons, our Energy Director and a Chartered Engineer, brings deep experience across water, transport and energy, supporting communities and future infrastructure.

A graduate of the University of Galway with a first class honours degree in Civil Engineering, John’s early career included delivering key water infrastructure such as the Ballycoolin Water Tower in Dublin. As part of the Leixlip to Ballycoolin Water Supply Scheme, this project strengthened supply resilience and improved water pressure across the Dublin region.

He later contributed to the Kildare Route Project, supporting upgrades along the Hazelhatch section of the main Galway to Dublin line into Heuston Station, enhancing capacity and reliability on a vital rail corridor.

His experience progressed into energy, where he played a key role on the Walney Substation for the offshore wind farm, delivering infrastructure to connect renewable energy into the UK electricity network.

John Gibbons, Coffey's Energy Director

More recently, John has delivered critical energy infrastructure in Ireland, including civil works for a back up power generation facility in the Midlands and an anaerobic digestion plant in the south. He has also led synchronous condenser projects in counties Kerry and Sligo, supporting assets that stabilise the grid, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and enable greater integration of renewable energy.

Prior to his current role, John held a senior operational leadership position, leading multidisciplinary teams and overseeing complex project delivery. Today, as Energy Director, he brings that experience to shaping and growing our Energy division, guiding strategy and strengthening capability.

As we expand across civils, M&E and technology, our focus remains on delivering smart, sustainable infrastructure through innovation and technical excellence, while building trusted, long term partnerships.

At Coffey, our values guide everything we do. Do The Right Thing, Do It Better and Do It Together shape how we deliver and create lasting impact for the communities we serve.

The energy transition is accelerating, and the role of infrastructure has never been more important.
