Dexcom, a global leader in continuous glucose monitoring for people with diabetes, is establishing its first European manufacturing facility in Athenry, County Galway. Coffey was contracted to design and construct a dedicated Wastewater Treatment Plant (WwTP) for the site to support this major investment in Ireland’s life sciences sector.

The project is being implemented in two phases to accommodate current and future operational requirements.
𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬:
• Phase 1: Initial treatment of wastewater flows up to 77.5 m³/day.
• Phase 2: Future expansion to handle a total flow of 155 m³/day.
This phased approach allows for scalability and adaptation to the evolving needs of the Dexcom facility.
𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬:
Coffey proposed and is implementing a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) system. This system was selected for its advantages in:
• Energy and operational cost efficiency
• Reduced reactor volume and hydraulic retention time
• Simplified control systems
• Compact footprint, ideal for the limited site area
𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞:
The project involves the design and construction of:
• Inlet works, including auger and manual screens
• Balance, aeration, settlement and sludge holding tanks
• MCC kiosk, including electrical and mechanical installations
• Finishing works including drainage, roadworks, footpaths, kerbing and fencing
Construction works have been completed successfully and in accordance with the Client’s schedule, with commissioning to take place over the summer. The design and build were completed in just 7 months, a great achievement made possible by dynamic, positive collaboration with Dexcom Ireland – Athenry throughout.

Coffey would like to thank Dexcom for their continued partnership and we look forward to completing the final commissioning phase in line with project requirements.
