Delgany to Blacklion Chapel Road Improvement Scheme

Section 1 Now Open to Traffic

Section 1 of the Delgany to Blacklion Chapel Road Improvement Scheme has now opened to full two-way traffic, marking an important milestone for this locally focused infrastructure project.

Surfacing, line marking and the majority of construction activities have now been completed along this section, with finished cycle and pedestrian pathways in place. The road was fully reopened prior to the Christmas shutdown, restoring a key local route for residents, schools and businesses while delivering long term safety and accessibility improvements.

The scheme is being delivered by Coffey Construction (Ireland) Ltd. in collaboration with Wicklow County Council and DBFL Consulting Engineers Ltd.

Improving a key local connection

Section 1 extends from the Convent Road Roundabout to Chapel Road and forms part of a wider phased upgrade of this busy link between Delgany and Blacklion. The works are designed to improve safety, accessibility and connectivity for all road users, with a particular focus on pedestrians and cyclists.

Completed works within this section include more than 1,000 square metres of new concrete footpaths, significantly enhancing pedestrian safety and accessibility. New cycle facilities have also been delivered, supporting active travel and encouraging safer, more sustainable everyday journeys.

To support future infrastructure needs, over 3 kilometres of new service ducting has been installed as part of the works, reducing the need for future excavation and minimising long-term disruption along the route.

Managing works in a live environment

While Section 1 is now fully open to two-way traffic, some localised traffic management remains in place to facilitate final minor activities. These include works at local accesses and the installation of new public lighting. This approach has allowed the project team to complete finishing works safely while maintaining access for the local community.

Progress continuing on Section 2

Works on Section 2 of the scheme are progressing well. To date, nearly 4 kilometres of new ducting network has been installed, along with approximately 350 linear metres of new drainage infrastructure. These accommodation works are laying the groundwork for the next stages of road widening and active travel enhancements.

Construction on the wider Delgany to Blacklion Chapel Road Improvement Scheme will continue in phases through to mid 2026, with a continued focus on safety, active travel and long-term community benefit.
