From First to Future: Supporting Ireland’s Renewable Energy Journey

When Ireland’s first commercial wind farm began generating power at Bellacorrick, Co. Mayo in 1992, it marked a turning point in our national energy story.

Coffey was proud to play a part in this pioneering project. Working with ESB and ESBI, we delivered the construction of the Bellacorrick 110kV Station — including the Main Control Building, transformer slabs and bases, roadways, fencing, drainage and ducting — enabling the grid connection of what would become a milestone in Irish renewables.

The site, managed by Renewable Energy Ireland and owned by Bord na Móna, housed 21 turbines with a total installed capacity of 6.45 MW. For over 30 years, it generated around 17 GWh annually and supplied power to 4,500 homes.

In January 2026, the final turbine was dismantled – not as an end, but to make space for the future. The adjacent Oweninny Wind Farm, already Ireland’s largest onshore wind project, is now expanding with turbines up to 200 metres tall and significantly greater capacity. Once complete, it will rank among the largest wind farms in Europe.

This is more than a change in infrastructure – it’s a clear signal of where energy is headed.

Coffey continues to support the development of critical energy projects across Ireland and the UK. We bring decades of experience, practical know-how and a deep commitment to delivering lasting infrastructure that powers communities and protects the future.
