We were delighted to welcome students from ATU Sligo to the Lough Talt Water Treatment Plant on Friday morning for an engaging site visit and learning experience.
Students studying the Level 6 Water Treatment Operations programme, along with their lecturer Lisa Cronin, visited the site to gain practical insight into how a working treatment facility operates. The course is designed to equip students and industry professionals with the knowledge and skills required to operate and maintain water and wastewater treatment plants, covering topics such as treatment processes, compliance, health and safety, monitoring systems and plant maintenance.

During the visit, students explored the operations of the chloramination treatment process used at the plant and learned about the maintenance and operational controls required to keep a facility like this running safely and in contractual compliance.
The Lough Talt Water Treatment Plant plays a vital role in the region, supplying clean drinking water to communities across South Sligo including Tubbercurry, Ballymote and surrounding areas. The plant uses modern treatment processes including filtration, UV disinfection and chloramination to help ensure a safe and reliable water supply for local communities.

Supporting the visit were members of the Coffey team including Enda Commons, Conor Tully (Regional Supervisor) and operators Dylan Willis and Paul McGrath, who shared their experience and answered questions from the students.
Visits like this are an important way of connecting classroom learning with real world infrastructure and supporting the next generation of professionals entering the water industry.
It is always encouraging to see the interest and enthusiasm from students exploring careers in the sector.
