Coffey Appointed for Castletroy Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade

Coffey has been awarded the Design, Build and Operate contract for the Castletroy Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade by Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Limerick City and County Council. This vital project will future-proof wastewater services for one of Ireland’s fastest-growing urban areas.

The current plant operates near its design capacity of 45,000 PE (population equivalent). This upgrade will increase its capacity to treat 77,500 PE, with infrastructure also being provided for future expansion to 81,100 PE.

Key Project Deliverables

This project involves a comprehensive set of improvements to the existing facility, all of which will take place within the current site boundary. Operational continuity will be maintained throughout the entire construction process.

Key deliverables for the project include:

  • Expanded Treatment Capacity: Upgrading the plant to handle a greater volume of wastewater.
  • Stormwater Management: Construction of a 4,500m³ stormwater storage and return system.
  • Inlet Works Upgrade: A full upgrade of the inlet works, including new screens, a grit trap, and an odour control system.
  • Sludge Treatment: Conversion of existing assets for sludge storage and handling, along with an upgrade to dewatering systems and centrifuges.
  • Enhanced Flood Resilience: Installation of new flood resilience infrastructure, including a flood event pumping station.
  • Energy Efficiency: Enhancements to improve energy efficiency, including the installation of solar panels.
  • SCADA Integration: Upgraded SCADA integration to improve control and monitoring of the plant.

This project is a critical step in protecting the Lower River Shannon SAC (Special Area of Conservation), supporting sustainable regional growth, and ensuring the long-term resilience of wastewater services in East Limerick.

At Coffey, we are committed to enhancing communities through engineering excellence, and this project reflects that purpose.
