Creating a Sustainable and Accessible Galway with Active Travel Upgrades

At Coffey, we believe infrastructure should improve lives as well as landscapes. Our team is currently delivering major road and active travel upgrades along Ballybane Road and Castlepark Road in Galway in partnership with Galway City Council’s Active Travel Department. Supported by the National Transport Authority (NTA) and the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF), this project is a vital step in building a safer, greener, and more sustainable city.

Active Travel Infrastructure in Galway

With over 50 years of experience in civil engineering and sustainable infrastructure, Coffey has delivered projects across Ireland that enhance mobility and community wellbeing.

As part of the Galway Active Travel Network, this project includes:

  • Segregated pedestrian and cycle lanes to make walking and cycling safer.
  • New bus stops and upgraded crossings to improve access to public transport.
  • Smarter junctions designed to enhance safety and reduce congestion.
  • Full road resurfacing and landscaping for a long-lasting, people-friendly upgrade.

Community-Focused Road Improvements

A key element of this project is collaboration. From the outset, we engaged with local residents, businesses, and students at Atlantic Technological University (ATU). Their feedback helped shape practical improvements:

  • Safer routes for students travelling to and from ATU.
  • Greener, low-carbon travel options for families.
  • Better connections for commuters and local businesses.

By listening to the community, we are delivering infrastructure that truly meets Galway’s needs.

Progress on Sustainable Transport in Galway

Work is already well underway, and the transformation along Ballybane Road and Castlepark Road is becoming visible. Once complete, this project will:

  • Support Galway’s transition to a low-carbon transport network.
  • Make active travel and public transport more attractive options.
  • Contribute to a more connected and people-friendly city.
