As communities across East Limerick continue to grow, investing in resilient wastewater infrastructure is essential.
Coffey is continuing work on the upgrade of the Castletroy Wastewater Treatment Plant on behalf of Uisce Éireann under a Design, Build and Operate contract.
Delivering major upgrades within a live operational wastewater treatment plant requires careful planning, close collaboration and an unwavering commitment to maintaining essential services throughout construction.
Once complete, the upgraded facility will increase treatment capacity from 45,000 PE to 77,500 PE, with provision for future expansion to 81,100 PE. This investment will help support future housing, economic growth and environmental protection across the region.
A significant construction milestone has recently been achieved with the completion of the secant piling works and excavation of the new 4,500m³ stormwater storage tank. The next phase will involve the installation of tension piles, followed by construction of the reinforced concrete liner wall.
The project includes:
• A new 4,500m³ stormwater storage and return system
• Upgrades to inlet works and primary and secondary treatment processes
• Enhanced sludge handling, dewatering and integrated SCADA systems
• Flood protection measures, including a dedicated pumping station
• Installation of 74 rooftop solar panels
• Upgrades to site infrastructure, including roads, drainage and lighting
The installation of 74 rooftop solar panels will help reduce operational energy demand, supporting the delivery of more sustainable infrastructure.
By increasing treatment capacity and modernising key treatment processes, the upgraded facility will support regional development while helping to protect the Lower River Shannon Special Area of Conservation.
Every milestone brings the project another step closer to delivering the infrastructure needed to support growing communities and protect the environment for future generations.
